Peer Comments Project 2
Bryce Beard
Clever use of aluminium cans to create an up-cycled product. However, I have seen similar things and is generally a throw away gift. You needed to figure out a way to make people keep the product due to sentimental reasons.

Reflection C - Consumerism
Consumerism has become the core of global society and as an industrial designer, my products should follow Okala strategies that will reduce and ultimately reverse the damage that has already been done. Fortunately, the message has been heard and businesses have started to take action to satisfy the guilty conscience of society.
Consumerism being an external factor that drives product sales, is not necessarily essential to sell products. As a designer, ethical products that serve a need in society will drive sales in it's own right. Marketing may become redundant once people start buying what they need and not what society constitutes the consumer's wants are.
In terms of BP not having fault in it's carbon footprint and blaming it on the consumer who buys the petrol, in my opinion, is incorrect. Petrol consuming cars have dominated the entire automobile market. Only recently have we seen a niche re-emerge; the clean alternative fueled cars eg. electric, water, solar, kinetic power etc.
Consumers have basically one choice when it comes to purchasing an affordable car of their aesthetic choice; the market is monopolized by petrol consuming cars. BP creating 'wind farms' is just a ploy to ease the guilty conscience of society. It is not addressing the bigger issue; the carbon footprint of fossil fuel usage.
Consumerism is an idea, a man-made force that drives an imaginary god called the 'economy'. If you take away marketing and if products were seen exactly for what they are, then consumerism would not be an issue. Consumerism would be just what it is;

Nice design. Leedham, I like how you moved away from making it look like a zip tie and made it a modern chic design that would look nice anywhere.

Gizem , I love the tree light. The soft illuminated tree is beautiful touch to any park and I would love to see this in a park near me one day. However, I do not think the kinetic mechanism has been completely though through.

Bryce, I love your CAD modeling and beautifully organic designs. I would have loved to see it with the light element that was shown in earlier design stages however it looks amazing as it is!

I have experimented with my chosen form and improved it. I have also figured out installation and rotating details for the design. Below are screen shots of my CAD process and a draft technical drawing with general dimensions.

I love the concept and think its great that you have accomodated for multiple scenes. I think the aesthetic is appealing. The placement of the sculpture should be in key areas that overlook the site to compensate for the lack of height adjustment.

Street Furniture WPR2
My skate park camera dock has begun to take shape. I have experimented with many forms and have settled on a final design to show my tutor tomorrow. I want to confirm the design before I begin 3D modeling. I have also studied the Street Furniture website and have decided that the manufacturing and material processes will follow similarly to that of the Arqua Water Fountain.
I am also considering to make the camera dock an integrated light bollard aswell, to illuminate the area at night for safety.

It is a pretty good concept overall. I like the universal aspect of the design where the camera is self provided by the user and the availability created for a new addition to skateboard culture. The tripod approach the platform provides is quite clever. However you need to consider the free perspective and camera movement a regular tripod provides with the form that you are using for your design. I like the design of the form that you are using, it is almost a sculptural form. I believe it could be a brilliant project if the idea is developed to a further degree.

Designing something for a skatepark really requires some extra thought. If it's in the park, people are going to want to be able to skate on it. This isnt necessarily a bad thing though, you can definitely incorporate light and a camera dock into something that can be skated on. Materials that facilitate graffiti removal and are incredibly durable will need to be researched. I'm really looking forward to seeing this explored further :)

WPR 2 - Green Gifting
I have experimented with wire mock-ups of my universal fitting device and found a few flaws which I am working on fixing.
I need to also find a fastener that works like a snap but has appealing metallic shiny button like outer surfaces which I cannot seem to find. I have just inquired the below address:

They have just told me that they do not have anything like what I described. This is proving to be difficult to find. I may have to hand make it however that will take too long. I will continue to search in Jaycar now.
They also have nothing. I may have to change my design.

Bryce Beard: Love your concept and the use of material, great choice. The only suggestion that i can make is to look into how the shade will clip over existing lights. Other than that i'm really interested into how the design evolves and what the final product looks :)
Gizem Kurangil:
I love the wide range of material research you have done for this assessment. However I think you need to experiment with the material to truly understand the properties of bamboo veneer. Another aspect I think you need to think of is the form and how it is going to reflect innovation. Think of how manufacturing techniques is going to achieve the form you will design as well as considering product life-cycle including its afterlife. A way to get started on answering this points is to look at OKALA strategies.

Paris Cockinos
I think it was a great idea to design for a niche market that has been neglected. It works well and however I agree in changing the colour of the box so that it looks less like the stereotypical matchbox. This will further improve your solution to your social issue. Your rationale looks nice with the complimentary green and red theme. Awesome!
Luke Messina
Luke, I think your idea is great for backpackers and hikers. It is travel light and keeps things sterile. Your rationale has great detail and looks awesome. I would have however stuck to only one colour theme to keep things consistent. I particularly love the fact that it perfectly fits over the water bottle to release the tablet. Awesome!

I think it's a great solution for portion control and will help people be better conscious of how much oil they are putting into their cooking. The cover page rendering looks awesome and would have been good to see more of that style render. Your appearance model was very realistic and must have been hard to make. Awesome!

Josh's ration perforated seed reel is exciting and I personally think it has a very high pleasure-ability factor. This idea can be transposed to applications other than just emergency food rations. I love it!
